TVB's Assistant General Manager Peter Au Wai Lam recently admitted to all the flaws that have been plaguing the station, causing several of their dramas to suffer from low ratings.
Groove Asia reported that recently, Peter stated that the low ratings for "Bullet Brain" and "Beauty At War" surprised him as both were produced using different techniques to meet audiences' expectations.
"In the past, audiences criticised TVB series for lacking creativity, and our colleagues also hoped for something new. However, the ratings have not been ideal despite the new approaches. The crew will have to reflect on this downfall."
He added, "Any new attempt comes with consequences. In the future, we'll keep the production to a balance. "When Heaven Burns" also had low ratings, but it was later regarded as a quality series. Perhaps the production of this series was too rushed."
When asked his views regarding Sheren Tang's problem with piecemeal scripts, Peter stated, "Last minute scripts are inevitable in the TV and film world because everyone is pursuing perfection. But, I propose having a complete script before the filming begins. Piecemeal script does indeed cause an impact on the artistes."
Meanwhile, he also admitted that TVB has been having problems with the lack of actors to play meaty roles, ever since many of their senior actors decided not to renew their contract.
"Stars have different ideas. Those who lack patience would want to go out and work elsewhere. We need new faces. We're seeing the same artistes appear in two or three of the current broadcasting series because there is indeed a shortage of artistes."
However, Peter stated that it was not a new issue and that changes are necessary in order to prevent it from happening again, assuring that TVB will do better on their series in the future.
